Acupuncture in physiotherapy involves inserting fine, sterile needles into specific anatomical points (such as trigger points or nerve pathways) to stimulate the nervous system.
Its primary clinical goals are to alleviate acute and chronic pain, reduce muscle tension, and accelerate tissue healing. It does this by triggering the release of natural pain-relieving chemicals (like endorphins) and improving local circulation.
Whilst using many of the same anatomical points used in traditional Chinese medicine, physiotherapists mainly use it based on neurophysiological and evidence-based anatomical principles rather than the flow of traditional energy or Qi.
You will be assessed to see if this treatment approach is clinically appropriate for your care. It is most effective when used in conjunction with exercise rehabilitation.

We don’t just look at where you feel pain as this does not always indicate where the issue is. In a biomechanical assessment we look at your postural alignment and movement patterns i.e the mechanisms of how your body moves. This can help us to better identify the root cause of pain, injury or inefficient performance. This can make the difference between short term relief and longer lasting changes.
The findings of a biomechanical assessment can help us to make a diagnosis and guide appropriate treatment options and progressions to help you reach your optimal function.
